15 Awesome Freelance Designers Websites

One thing that has always amazed me when I have been on the hunt for a freelance designer, was how some of them rarely bothered to make their own homepages visually appealing. You would think that a great designer would consequently have a great website, but more often than not, this is not the case.

Surprising, considering the fact that the webpage of a designer is basically an advertisement of their own design ability. Admittedly, the portfolio is where most of them focus their energies, but at the end of the day the first thing a future client sees is the website, so it makes sense to make it great.

These websites do that very well. So well infact that they are in my opinion, some of the best on the web! Check them out and let me know what you think in the comments!

Caitlin McEvoy

First off, i cannot believe how young this talented designer is. Only 21! The way she has designed the site is a personal style preference of mine. Letting the design do the talking. And boy does it speak for itself. The designs shown, use typography incredibly well. There is also a great use of color within the examples designs on the page aswell. It goes to show that good use of these two things almost completely compensate for a lack of other design elements. They, when done well, bring life to an otherwise black and white page. In short, this is minimalism the way it should be done.

Two things i love about this design. 1. The simplicity of it. and 2. The use of color. The blue is very easy on the eye and mixes very well with the very contrasting black. All around, a very effective freelancer site.

Netseed

You know a designer is ballsy when they use a color like the one used on this site. It is pulled off VERY well though, in my opinion. If i was looking for a web designer, this site would make me want to know more, because it strikes my attention with the dominant color and graphics that it uses. It is making a firm statement, with the brave use of a single, dominant color, something that says a lot about the firm that is behind it. It also engages you instantly, which is useful when your prospective clients may have MULTIPLE tabs open at once.

I don’t usually like black as a color choice for websites, mostly because it has a slightly negative/dark feel to it. But with the light gradient and orange/white complimentary colors, it seems to work for this site quite well.

Passion About Design

This design doesn’t really show much in the way of examples of previous work, but it does in and of itself, show what the designer is capable of doing. The colors on the site are very ‘serious’, giving you the feeling that this designer is the same. Its also interesting that he shares the books that he’s reading at the moment. This tells you a lot about the person behind the design. Which i would argue, is even more important than the examples of their previous work. It can tell you, without seeing anything else, if this is a person that you would like to work with.

Jure Stern

This design is very relaxing and quite easy on the eye. It displays all the information you need to know in a very concise and succint way. I would hit the contact button, without even looking at the design examples that he’s done!

StrawCastle

This is another example of a site that lets the previous work do the talking. With these fine illustrations and a very warm site that encourages you to engage with his work, by the use of dark brown and beige as a secondary color. This site probably does very well indeed!

DoodleMachine

This is a VERY creative site! And i think, a great example of how one can use illustration and color to great effect. The color choice is very risky, because it is so strong, but it really makes this web design unique. This is one that once you see it, you don’t quickly forget it. Which is pretty rare with websites these days. The even more impressive thing is that it does this without going over the top with it.

The use of pencil like drawings in design, usually signals to me an individual who is very creative.  This because of the childlike nature of pencil drawings. This design tells me that this guy is creative and willing to take risks, something that is becoming more and valuable with every passing day. I would be rushing to the contact button on landing on this site.

Joshua Keenes

This is a very ‘human’ design. With the picture of the designer at the forefront, it makes you feel as if he is talking to you directly. That alone quickly makes you want to know more as most people are not really used to seeing an image of the designer like this. The actual design of the site itself is also very well done, and it further emphasizes the casual and human feel that i think this designer is trying to put forward with this design. With little details like scribbles and improntu paint splashes on the screen, you really do feel like you’re dealing with a human being.

Kev Adamson

This is a very unique and extremely interesting site, by British designer, ‘Kev Adamson’. He really puts his own personality and style into it, without really following any of the prevailing design trends. Most of the time when people do that, it does not come out well, but with this site it seems to REALLY work. He aslo uses a text bio, to get you interested in using his services -alongside examples of his designs. This is a great way to do it as it works for people who would rather read about you and are better at taking in information that way.

Matt Hamm

I simply love the simplicity of this site :). It shows me what the designer, ‘Matt Hamm’ is about and visually also, shows me what he can do. Without wasting any time. Very well done website for a freelancer. And even better for super ADHD people like me! :)

Pixel Worx Factory

This is probably my favorite use of color of all the designs. There are no huge contrasts, the colors just seem to all compliment each other. The big headline is also very straight to the point. With the quality of design on this site. The contact button would be clicked in seconds!

Matt Pealing

These are fairly popular colors online, and the design of this site overall is relatively simple. With a simple bio and two quick snapshots of his previous work – as well as a well designed site. This would probably get a lot of people clicking the contact button.

Thanks for including my site Tapha. It’s heartening to know it’s still getting kudos even though – in web terms – it’s almost ancient :)

Although some of the sites showcased here are very creative and nice readers understand better a clean and readable website rather than a confusing one…less is more. This is only my opinion!
