Scroll Activated Animations – New Trend in Web Design

Each year animation is gaining more influential and domination position; web developers carry out diverse experiments with it, starting from creating basic effects and ending up with pioneering ones. Without doubts, such an avalanche of projects that are driven by animations is caused by advances in web technologies and insatiable desire of web developers to take a website to the completely new level. Slowly but surely, the web is becoming definitely a more pleasant, sophisticated and dynamic place to visit

As befits each component piece of any website, an animation also undergoes changes and is subject to trends, even being a more complimentary and optional element. Though it sometimes goes almost unnoticed, so to speak without a proper “pageant”, yet we can still feel it. Thus, this year scroll activated animations along with lazy animations are going to pull the strings. They bring their own touches and appeal to the website by providing simple users with a more smooth, careful and calm exploration. This approach, of course, is more typical for long one page websites that strive for giving their visual story a more dynamic and spirited appearance. However, this sphere is not its only manifestation; this effect is also applied to various corporate websites and online portfolios that as a rule are fully-illustrated. So in general, scroll activated animations can be deservedly called a new trend of 2014.

Let’s explore several impressive examples of website designs that skillfully make use of this popular and trendy solution.

You can easily achieve very similar results by using a library I’ve created called WOW.js.

Great article topic. Working on some current websites now and was thinking this might be the way to go. Telling stories with visual data keeps the audience interested enough and will help get the response one needs and helps create a stand out brand.

This is not the way to go. Many examples here are usable on mobile devices, and frankly, many of them are incomprehensible on my desktop. I thought my desktop browser was hanging on some of them. Unbelievably distracting. Scroll means scroll :-)

Do you have any evidence that audiences are really interested in trying to navigate/comprehend sites like this? Remember sometimes people will say they like new things so as not to hurt your feelings, or to seem “cutting edge” (nobody wants to be a luddite, after all).

      But what is the evidence?

These pages are annoying and break the basic paradigm of user interaction. When I scroll my mouse I want the page to scroll. The unexpected and unclear interaction of my scroll with the animation is just plain wrong.

Skrollr.js is suitable for a simple animations. For something more complex I would recommend SuperScrollorama or ScrollMagic, they are both powered by Greensock animation library so only your imagination is the limit.

I have a few scrolling tutorials on my blog – http://www.ihatetomatoes.net/blog if you’re interested, check them out.
