Subscription Emails That Keep People Subscribed
The renewal notice is the most important email in the set, and it belongs before the charge, not after it. An unexpected card charge is the single most common reason a subscription ends in a chargeback rather than a renewal, and a week of warning costs you almost nothing.
Set expectations in the first email and keep them. Say how often you will write and what will be in it. A list that knows what is coming unsubscribes less than one that is surprised every time.
Treat failed payments as a sequence, not an event. Cards expire constantly and most of those customers still want the product. Three well-spaced emails with a one-click card update recover a meaningful share of what looks like churn.
Make cancelling easy and say so. A visible cancel link reads as confidence, reduces support load, and keeps you on the right side of subscription-cancellation rules in most markets. Hiding it converts nobody and costs you the goodwill for a win-back later.
Offer a preference centre before the unsubscribe. Most people leaving a list want less email, not no email — frequency options and topic choices keep a subscriber you would otherwise lose outright.
5 Subscription Lifecycle Emails
These five cover a subscription from sign-up to win-back.
- Subscribe confirmation - Confirm the address and, where you use double opt-in, make the confirmation link the only thing in the email. Deliverability for everything afterwards depends on this one landing.
- Welcome and what to expect - Frequency, content, and how to change either. Set the contract here and the rest of the relationship is easier.
- Renewal reminder - Sent before the charge, with the amount, the date and the plan named. The email that prevents chargebacks.
- Payment failed - Triggered, repeated a few times, and built around a single update-card button. Recovered revenue rather than marketing.
- Win-back - Sent after a cancellation has settled, not the same week. Ask what went wrong, and make the offer secondary to the question.
